“It’s official. Canada now has a better manned space program than the US.” brundlefly
Well, near space. A couple of 17 year old students from Agincourt Collegiate Institute in Scarborough, sent a Lego man attached to a helium balloon nearly 15 miles into the atmosphere this week. The two uber geeks said their inspiration was a video taken by MIT students who released just a balloon into near space. Watch the video to see the stellar trip below. Of course… they didn’t give him a Lego helmet or Lego oxygen tank. The Lego man’s condition is currently unknown…
Mitsubishi has nabbed a few title’s it has never seen before for one of its lineup by releasing the i MiEV. An EPA-leading 112 MPGe (Miles Per Gallon equivalent) sounds pretty good, along with the title of being the cheapest electric vehicle in the United States. Worried about possible battery problems? The i MiEV contains an in-house built Lithium-ion battery pack with an air cooled system. How about an 8 year/100,000 limited battery warranty? Check. On a full charge, you are set to get 62 miles with a top speed of 82 mph.
The i MiEV also has an all new 3-way charging system, which allows you to charge with a standard 120v, 240v home power source. Or get the optional Quick charge port and take it to your local Electric Charging station (Find one Here, there are more than you think) The operating cost is 70% less than that of a comparable gasoline powered vehicle according to Mitsubishi’s website. The price tag after government tax incentives and rebates is a beautiful $21,625. Rear wheel drive, regenerative breaking. All sounding pretty good. If you want to learn more about the specs of this puppy, check them out here.
Here comes the electric bone I must pick. Why are electric cars so ugly? And why do most of them have ridiculous names? I know what you are thinking, “It doesn’t look that bad.” That doesn’t mean that you like it. This may not be a big problem for social conformity zombies, but it is for me! I am not picking on just the i MiEV, but since its holding so many cushy EV titles, I am going to single it out a bit.
Being on the cutting edge of automotive technology is great, and many American’s would love to jump on the electric bandwagon. But this car is exactly why most Americans don’t, or haven’t yet. It seems like if someone wanted to do the morally responsible thing of buying an emissions free vehicle, they MUST be stripped of their sense of style, and any dignity they have left. I feel like a kid again, opening his lunch box and seeing a peanut butter and jelly sandwich on WHEAT bread. Yea it was healthier for me, but it ruined the sandwich. Or one could liken it to buying an amazing cashmere sweater, or silk pajamas with Steven Tyler‘s face knitted into it. Feels great, looks terrible.
Why couldn’t the designers of the i MiEV look across the table and take a few lessons from the Lancer designers? Have you seen the Lancer? Its gorgeous! Then the creators of these EV’s all look at each other and say, “Gee I wonder why they aren’t selling.” Because nobody wants to look like a wiener driving down the street. What makes a Ferrari sell? Why do they still sell at all, they get terrible gas mileage. Cargo space is non-existent, and forget practicality in any instance but a James Bond flick. Sure it is fast, but speed alone doesn’t sell a car. A Ferrari is a work of art. Not only does it sell, and hold its value, but I’ve actually seen a grown man hug one before.
How exactly do I announce this car? Do I read each letter individually? Do you want me to say, “I, My E. V.?” Or do I read it altogether and sound like I am trying to speak Ewok? I am thoroughly convinced that 50% of the people who buy a Charger, or a Corvette buy them because the name is cool. That sounds ridiculous, but if you stop and think about it, you know I’m right. And so Mitsubishi, when you rename or at least code name this puppy the Mitsubishi Amaze, I will promise to test drive one. And if you redesign it to look cooler, not just me, but many Americans will say, “I’ll take one.”
